Features are everything

Bells and whistles wear off, but features never do. Ensure you have a list of features that are mandatory as well "nice to have" as a bonus. Always make sure the mandatory features are met before moving forward. The features must do what you want, and not you do what the features necessitate you do.

Quality Drives rule

Cheap and low grade hard disks drives are for short term gain. Make certain the hard disk drives used for integration meet the exacting requirements and tolerance needed by RAID systems in question. Obtain assurances that the manufacturers of hard disk drives considered provide confirmation of compatibility within RAID systems; if not do not use alternatives or non-compatible drives, the period for warranty must not be below three years... After all, it is very little use to select the highest specified and quality system with rich features, only to find they have been fitted with below par drives, thus making it venerable to disk failures and intermittent data loss and compromising the protection of data. Modular System

Aside from the normal software features, hardware features can play a key role when the need arises for upgrades. Ensure you can upgrade drives of large capacity to expand your system without loss of data (Capacity Expansion), and if available demand for RAID change as well without loss of data (RAID Expansion) the ability to move up i.e. from RAID 5 to RAID 6 without having to re-format the volume. Another important upgrade will be to try and install more memory if possible. A useful upgrade if the system is to be deployed in a virtual environment, as you can never have too much memory in this mode. In some instances, potential customers have requested to include expansion of NAS devices i.e. to expand current volume by attaching another device, this may prove fatal, as evolving larger volumes does create a monitoring and support nightmare.

Warranty and Support

All Storage systems need to offer more than adequate warranty coverage to ensure a decent return on investment without having to pay for unbudgeted repair costs. Easy to follow and simple processes for return are also vital to ensure continuity is resumed after system failures. Manufacturers that offer quick warranty repair or parts swap out are often the best resolve if on-site maintenance is not an option. Advance warranty replacement options need to be investigated if offered as possible options. Maybe if downtime is an issue and you are deploying a primary storage head then examine the possibility of having a replicated back up device to ensure continuity if a fault occurs. This is a must if the deployment is for a disaster recovery site. Generally, telephone support is rare and not the best way to resolve an issue. Clarity is encouraged and as such logging technical calls via the website is recommended and possibly the best way forward.

Pre-built or not

Many vendors do not offer a configuration and testing service that includes installing drives and setting the system at the desired RAID level. More often than not, buyers are succumbed to buying a diskless NAS system and hard drives separately, then assemble, prepare RAID and complete the cycle in preparation of deployment themselves. Our advice is simple. Buy pre-installed and try to stop the urge of DIY for NAS, as the advantages outweigh the savings that can be made, if at all. This is by far the most ideal way of buying a storage array that is supposed to share, protect and be reliable. If you go the DIY route you may receive hard disk drives that may be faulty and need to be returned. This may be the same scenario for the diskless NAS array. Why deal with the hassle factor of putting it together and then testing it? Certainly not with the way burn-in testing is carried out, that can be unique to the vendors you buy from. Pre-built wins hands down every time!

Buy from a Specialist

Our ultimate recommendation is to emphatically consider buying from a storage specialist, and avoid any other reseller profile including the ones that sell all computer and IT related products and will not provide pre-sales or specific storage support. The other critical point to note will be in-depth product knowledge the specialist will have allowing you to be able to buy with confidence once an alignment of your needs are made with the corresponding storage solution being suggested. Of course, at the end of the day the choice is yours.
